Ellis Island by Mercdith Mok

'다재다능한 미국의 작곡가, 안무가, 감독, 영화 제작자인 메레디스 몽크는, 미국으로 향하는 수백만 이민자들이 들어오던 상징적인 입구, 엘리스 섬에 대한 영화 제작을 의뢰 받았다. 몽크는 영화 제작 과정에 관해 다음과 같은 말을 남겼다. "무척 고통스러운 과정이었습니다. 엘리스 섬에서는 인간이 상품화 되었죠. 이 영화는 '타인'을 대하는 태도에 대한 모드 것, 그리고 다른 사람을 대상화할 수 있다는 사실을 다루고 있습니다.'

 

엘리스 섬을 거쳐 이민 수속을 밟은 이민자의 수는 1906년 오늘 하루에만 총 11,747명으로 역대 최고치. 그해에만 무려 1,004,756명의 이민자가 미국으로 왔다. - 1일1클래식 1기쁨 by 클래먼시 버턴힐'

 

이상한 나라의 앨리스 섬과 어떤 관련이 있을까 하여 구글링을 해봤습니다.

그런데 그건 Alice는 여자이름, Ellis는 남자 이름인것 외엔 아직 잘 모르겠네요.

이렇게 꼬리에 꼬리를 무는 지식의 추적은, 잊혀지지 않는다던데. 좋은 경험인것같아요.  

youtube에서 Ellis섬에 대한 다큐멘터리를 찾았는데 너무 슬펐습니다.(물론 영어는 30%이해한듯;)

사람을 상품화 하는 과정. 이방인으로 산다는것의 이질감과 외로움.

이 소재로 만들어진 영화는 과연 어떤 메시지를 담고 있을까요?

오늘 111 클래식에서의 이 화두로, 별도로 한번 다뤄볼께요.

그런데, 잠깐 못 다큐멘터리등을 보니 '인간의 상품화' 에 대한 민낯을 볼 수 있을것같아요.

제가 알지 못하는 history가 있는것같아요. 역시,아직도 알아야 할것이 많은 오동입니다.

 

Ellis Island is a television miniseries, filmed in the United Kingdom, broadcast in three parts in 1984 on the CBS television network. The screenplay was co-written by Fred Mustard Stewart, adapted from his 1983 novel of the same title. The series tells the story of several immigrants from the late 19th century until the early 1910s, trying to achieve the American Dream and arriving on Ellis Island, hoping for a better life. Ellis Island highlighted numerous important events which occurred up to and during World War I, and many of the characters are based on real persons, such as Irving Berlin. The series marks the final appearance of Richard Burton.
