1. I spied a pile of mug shots sitting on the dest of my pal, Detective Joe Lodato.

2. I asked, voice quavering as I pointed at the photo. "What's this guy wanted for?"

3. "Him?" Joe said, grimacing in disgust. "Everything"

4. Now, from these two stories, you might conclude that gut actually works quite effectively.

5. Neither taught me anything.

6. I'm not denigrating gut.

7. But as a way of making cogent decisions in your life that you can explain to others - and especially as the means to a deliberate, self-aware lifestyle - it's simply not trustworthy enough.
